A firewall is a type of network security software or device which performs the function of monitoring network traffic which is outgoing or incoming and determines whether to allow or block the traffic as per the specified security rules.

A firewall is a type of network security software or device which performs the function of monitoring network traffic which is outgoing or incoming and determines whether to allow or block the traffic as per the specified security rules. The use of firewall for network security was discovered in the earlier years and it has been in use and still being implemented in many organizations and businesses that need to secure their network.
Firewall filters the traffic of data packets and ensure that the security of a private network is not interfered with by data travelling to it through a public network. A border is created between the internet and the network which the firewall is implemented to protect and conducts an inspection process for any data searched through the internet before entry through the network.

If a data packet is identified to be dangerous or harmful it is denied access into the network by the firewall. A firewall therefore prevents unauthorized access into a network system.
Advantages of using firewall
1. A firewall protects a computer system from attacks that are external. Attacks by intruders trying to gain access to a computer system are blocked and denied access.

2. Firewall monitors the traffic of data from a network trying to gain access into a computer system and also data that is flowing out of a computer system.
3. The use of a firewall has also helped to get rid of spys who aim at monitoring individual activity from a computer system and the unauthorized access to their benefit.
4. Firewall ensures that intruders in the form of Trojan horse are blocked. Intruders who access user data and then use the data for malicious activities are blocked by the use of firewall.
