ONLINE COUNSELLING SYSTEM

Online counselling refers to counselling services offered through the internet by means such as chat rooms, emails or even web cameras. The counselling systems are now being implemented and deployed in many health institutions that offer professional counselling services to patients. A therapist conducts the online therapy sessions with the clients through the developed website or application with an aim of solving the mental health issues faced by the clients. Advantages of online counselling systems.

1. Individuals who live in remote areas, away from such facilities offering counselling can be able to access the therapy services. People living in remote areas are able to access the therapy services online as long as they are connected to the internet and will no longer have to travel to the areas where the services are available.

2. Online counselling is more affordable. The therapists do not have to incur costs of renting space in a certain building to offer the therapy services which is expensive and as a result of lower costs incurred by the therapist, the cost the patients pay to receive the service is also affordable.

3. Online counselling is convenient. The therapist and the patients communicate at their own pace and time since it is not limited to a certain time frame.

4. It is preferred since it provides anonymity of the patients. Patients may be facing issues which they may find hard to disclose to anyone but through online counselling, they are able to hide their identity and therefore are free to open up to the therapists for help.

5. It has a variety of forms that are used to communicate. Communication between the therapist and the clients can be done through live chats, the use of emails or even through web cameras.

Disadvantages of online therapy.

1. It may not be of assistance when responding to emergency situations. A patient may be in need of help urgently and this may find the therapist offline and therefore resulting to no help when it is needed.

2. Online counseling may not be appropriate for those who face critical issues. The communication between a therapist and a patient facing critical issues may not be effective since there may be a challenge or barrier which may make the communication between the two not well understood.

3. May not be available to individuals living in areas with network difficulties. Online counselling needs internet connection for it to be effective and this may make the counselling services not available to individuals living in areas with no network access.
