Solutions for the Poor to Lessen Inequality in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Blockchain

AI, Virtual Reality, and Blockchain Will Change the Lives of the Poor

According to the United Nations Development Programme, nearly 1/2 of the world’s population of more than 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty or less than $1.25 a day. In the United States, 13.5% of Americans (43.1 million) live in poverty, 30% of Americans (100 million) Americans live in near poverty. Poverty is alive and well in our world today. As we usher in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: technology such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Blockchain has the potential to change the lives of people of the poor. When the day comes, when the lives of people living in poverty are no longer plagued with disease, stress, and inhumane working conditions, then our societies can truly be “civilized”.

Artificial Intelligence’s Role in Disease Prevention

One of the biggest issues with people who are living in poverty is a disease. Often, unsanitary living conditions coupled with an unhealthy diet cause the spread of diseases. Inadequate healthcare means that diseases are often untreated. Inadequate healthy food supply means that people, (even if fat) are often mal-nourished.

Virtual Reality’s role in education

When generations of people live in poverty, the only way out of the poverty cycle is through education. Education requires investment in teachers, schools, textbooks, and infrastructure. With remote places in the world now connected to the internet through cell phone networks, suddenly opportunities to pursue education doesn’t require a huge investment anymore. Online courses are increasingly popular in countries that have been historically underserved by higher educational institutions. These courses can now be AI-enabled to include empathic responses to students. For students in countries that lack the infrastructure, these virtual teachers are good substitutes when school is not an option.

Blockchain’s role in finance

When people think of blockchain, they often think of large banks using blockchain as secured ledgers to manage their payments, customer accounts, and data transactions. On the retail banking side, digital currencies using the blockchain network can enable “free” transfer of money around the world in countries where cash is currently king. Even in countries with limited resources and poverty, internet cafes and cheap cell phones allow people living in poverty to be connected to the world through the internet. Often, they rely on income sent home from mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers who are working aboard in more developed countries. With each money transfer of such income, we are reminded of how connected we all are in the world of finance.

Uniting the World

In the Age of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and blockchain, the world is coming closer together. Through technological collaborations, governments are learning to work with each other to implement solutions to deliver a higher quality of life to their citizens. This is good news for people who are living below the poverty line. As technology advances to help with food sustainability, healthcare, clean water, mental health, education, retail banking, and land rights, people who are living in poverty will soon have a new quality of life.
